KITS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO DEVELOP FINE MOTOR SKILLS

What are Fine Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills are all the things we do with our hands and fingers. The small, detailed and precise actions that we use everyday, from tying shoe laces and using cutlery to controlling a pencil, handling coins or building things.

They are the ability to use the thumb and index finger to pinch, the fingers to manipulate and bring objects from the palm to the fingertips, and the hand and webspace to grip, squeeze and stabilise.

Why are they important?

Fine motor skills are important abilities that can help someone be independent in their life. If a person has difficulty with their fine motor skills, they are likely to need more assistance from others to complete various tasks, including opening things or manipulating objects, or may need to use assistive technology/devices.

The fine motor skills that children develop are the ability to manipulate objects in increasing difficulty, feed themselves and manage their food with utensils, control and rotate a tooth brush, develop a pencil grasp and control a pencil to draw and write, operate scissors, fasten buttons and zips and participate in playful tasks like puzzles, construction and role plays.

Difficulty coordinating the fingers or low strength in the hand or fingers can impact a child’s fine motor skill development. It may be frustrating for them to try these tasks, they may avoid engaging in them or it can impact their learning, play and success with daily life skills.

How Let’s OT kits improve fine motor skills?

We have designed a range of kits that specifically develop or build on the development of fine motor skills. They are playful, engaging the kids purposefully, and involve practical, meaningful activities like science experiments and treasure hunts.

One of the important factors of skill development is when tasks are broken down, with added cues and visual information to assist, which is how our home therapy kits are beneficial.

Children are able to follow along with the video tutorials, coached and guided by an occupational therapist. Your child will be able to watch the examples and hear the instructions, helping them to practise the skills and movements required.

We know that everyone learns at different speeds, which is why the video tutorials are designed in a format that can be paused and revisited as often as needed.
