Crack the Code

Develop Handwriting and Visual Perception

This activity has been designed as an engaging way to develop your child’s handwriting skills, visual perception and problem-solving skills. Your child is required to unjumble the mixed words to spell the word correctly. It is an opportunity to make mistakes and persist with the more challenging words. It is also a great way to support your child in help seeking, whether they request help verbally or use non-verbal requests, such as a help card or gesturing.

Tip! Always Use Their Interests

We have created different themed ‘crack the codes’, so your child can work on one that is more purposeful and meaningful to them as it may relate to their interests. When completing other activities at home with your children, always integrate their interests, making the activities or tasks more motivating, enjoyable and purposeful. Can you relate a task to Elsa from Frozen or can you use a type attack from a Pokemon Battle to engage your child? Do your best to learn the lingo of their interests, it can be a huge help!

Participation is Valid in MANY Ways

Depending on your goal for your child, they may need you to scribe for them as they focus on unjumbling the words or perhaps your child might want to type the words on a computer, since handwriting is effortful or difficult. Maybe they prefer to rewrite the words on lines instead of the boxes provided, and that is ok too. Maybe they can watch you crack the codes. These are all appropriate and beneficial ways to participate, with accommodations enabling your child to engage where they are at or when they are ready. As adults and teachers, let’s be mindful and flexible so we can facilitate success and participation for our children.

How Does It Work?

  1. Ask your child which themed crack the code they would like to try.

  2. Print and begin working through solving the codes.

  3. Perhaps start with the short words which may be easier or help you child by filling in the first letter.

  4. Enjoy cracking the codes and if their interest is not here, try and make your own!
