We have themed our fine motor skills kit with engaging and exciting science activities to make skill development fun and meaningful. Fine motor skills are an essential component of independent living, being able to write or type, use cutlery or a toothbrush, or even for dressing and meal preparation.

Watch and follow our OTs as they guide you through different experiments from eruptions, making lava and drag races,  providing a range of opportunities for your child to use their hands and fingers to open, pour, mix and manipulate different materials to enhance their fine motor skills while also engaging their imagination and creativity.

Through the activities, you will gain valuable insights into your child’s fine motor skills with our informative parent videos explaining how to modify, accommodate and develop fine motor skills in daily life.

      • Volcano Land - 20 minutes
      • Using fine motor skills, imagination and creativity, your child will design volcano land, the location for their volcano which they will use materials in the kit to erupt! It is important to remember that Play can look different for all children and is valid, meaningful and joyful in different ways. This may mean your child could design volcano land in a way you least expect. This experiment also presents some sensory experiences to explore, such as tactile, visual and smell inputs. In the video we explain how to accommodate your child’s sensory needs and preferences in these moments.
      • Lava Lamp - 20 Minutes
      • A favourite activity in this kit is designing the lava lamp, pouring and mixing the materials to create a soothing visual regulation tool. While designing, your child is developing their coordination and fine motor skills including hand control and finger dexterity. They are also enhancing their ability to follow instructions and develop attention and focus. Throughout these tasks, your children are learning how to individualise and use the things they make to be meaningful and purposeful in their life.
      • Balloon Racing - 20 Minutes
      • Start your engines with an exciting balloon drag race! Learn about power and force, while also learning about breathing and breath control, an accessible tool for regulating and assisting with anxiety. In situations that we cannot control, we can still control our breathing. Let’s OT values creating activities and resources that connect the task and skills used to daily life, and the balloon racing is one of these examples. Learn how to breathe to relax the nervous system while continuing to develop fine motor skills and abilities like knot tying, using tape and coordinating both hands together.
