This new kit uses science experiments, craft and sensory exploration to help your child learn about their sensory systems, so they can understand the sensations they notice in their body and which ones may be alerting, calming or comforting. If children have difficulty making sense of the input their body receives, it can make the world around them overwhelming or confusing. We want to help children become advocates for their needs, particularly if they experience the world in their own unique way.

Watch and follow our OTs as they guide you through a sensory treasure hunt, cloud dough creation, fidget cube construction and a melting snowman experiment, providing a range of opportunities to notice and discuss different sensory input while building essential fine motor skills.

Through the activities, you will gain valuable insights into your child’s sensory needs and preferences while our informative parent videos will help you identify the sensory accommodations your child may need to stay regulated and participate to their best.

    SENSORY EXPLORERS KIT

    • Age
      5+ year olds

      • Younger children can participate with more adult support and modification of the activities.

      • A younger child’s participation can involve adult modelling.

Activities - Approximately 1 hour 50 minutes activity time.

      • Sensory Treasure Hunt - 30 Minutes

        • The adventurous treasure hunt around your home involves your child searching for the different materials in the kit that match their 8 sensory systems (sight, smell, auditory, touch, taste, interoception, vestibular movements and proprioception/pressure awareness).  This is a great way to help develop awareness of sensory input and sensory systems, as we can use their favourable sensory experiences to help with calming or alerting your child’s nervous system.  As they learn what their sensory preferences are, they will be more equipped to self advocate in the future.

      • Cloud Dough - 20 Minutes

        • If children are able to develop their fine motor skills during fun activities, their hand endurance, strength and coordination will carry over to other tasks, like writing or self care tasks - making them much easier to manage or learn. When making the cloud dough, they will develop their shoulder stability, grip strength, finger coordination, finger dexterity and isolation. Cloud dough is a soft, cloudy dough, made with simple materials, that creates an opportunity to explore tactile and smell sensations while enhancing and establishing a range of fine motor skills.

      • Fidget Cube - 30 Minutes

        • Fidgeting benefits whole body learners, who need to move and fidget in order to listen and focus. In this activity your children will design their own fidget cube with materials that match their own fidgeting needs. Do they prefer to stretch something, feel something rough or fidget with a combination of textures? This activity will be working on fine motor skills including scissor use, glueing, working with both hands, crossing the midline and of course, creativity!

      • Melting Snowman - 30 Minutes (+20mins freezer time)

        • The melting snowman is a science experiment and another opportunity to develop a range of fine motor skills and also sensation awareness. This activity requires the use of 2 hands to work together, which is a great way to develop and integrate the use of a ‘helping hand’ (non dominant hand), which is often required to stabilise materials and objects, particularly for self care tasks like for zips or shoes. Since this activity evolves and changes, it is also a great opportunity for your children to develop their attention and focus, looking for the subtle or rapid changes within the experiment.
